Unresponsive transmission on reverse

Cannot engage reverse on transmission and very smoke when starting first thing in the morning and when revving up on idle.

It does not engage when you use the shifter to put it into reverse, or you cannot move the gearshift to put it in reverse? Different issues. Do all of the forward gears work properly?
