Very possible that it could have a broken timing belt. To verify this easily you can loosen the bolts that hold on the upper timing cover and have someone crank the engine while you look for movement of the belt and pulleys. There should be 6 bolts that hold the upper cover on. I have included a blowup view of all of the timing belt components.
