Car is burning oil and I don't know why. I have to put in a whole bottle of oil every week. There is white/clear smoke that comes out of the car only sometimes. The engine makes no whining or siren sound. Why is my car burning oil? Is it a bad turbo, a PCV replacement, or something else?

Hi,

It could be several different things. If the engine has been maintained, 87K miles is nothing. I have 160,000 on mine and it runs perfectly. So, first, do you notice and evidence of a leak? Keep in mind, there is a splash panel under the engine that can catch oil. From the top of the vehicle, check the splash pan below the engine to see if it looks wet.

Next, there could be a leak at the oil filter housing. Standing at the front of the vehicle, the housing will be on the left side of the engine below the air induction tube between the air filter box and throttle body. See pic 1 below. Check that area for leaks.

Next, there could be an issue with the crankcase pressure regulating valve. This valve functions similar to a PCV valve as you mentioned. However, there have been cases where it allows too much pressure to build which leads to oil consumption.

Before we jump into that, let's check the basics. Also, if you are using a quart of oil each week, let me know how many miles you put on the vehicle within that time period.

One other question. You mentioned white/clear smoke. I need you to check the engine coolant level. Also, check the condition of the motor oil. Remove the fill cap and check for evidence of a creamy tan substance. Let me know what you find.

Take care and let me know.

Joe

Note: If it hasn't been done yet, the manufacturer recommends the spark plugs be replaced at 60,000 miles.
