Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.
Both vehicles are good choices. They are both proven to be long lasting and dependable. However, it is hard for me to help without being there to inspect the vehicles. What I suggest is to check for the following and then base your decision on which seems to be the best deal based on condition and price.
Check for:
Oil leaks under the vehicle and under the hood
Rear differential oil leaks where the driveshaft attaches
Mileage
Rust on the frame and body components
Does everything work such as AC and all optional accessories
Car Fax to see if either was involved in an accident
Which has the most recent state safety and emissions inspections
Strange noises, ticks, knocks. From the engine compartment with engine on
Is the transmission fluid clean
How the vehicle drives

There are many more things to check. However, try to focus on the most important components.
As far as fuel economy, you have to keep in mind, neither one was designed to be a fuel miser. They are both designed to do heavy work. Because of weight, gear ratios, and design, they will not do well. The best fuel mileage from this type of vehicle I ever saw was from a Cummins diesel engine in a Chrysler product. That was 15 mpg.
Once again, both the Ford and Chevy are excellent choices. It really comes down to which is the best choice for the money.
Please feel free to ask any questions you may have.
Take care,
Joe
