This could be the result of a few things. First, is the check engine light staying on when the engine is running? If it is, have the computer scanned. Here is a quick video showing how it is done:

I realize most people don't own a scanner, but oftentimes, a parts store will do it free of charge.
Next, an engine vacuum leak can also cause this type of problem. Here is a link that explains how to check for leaks:
