Hey everyone, I'm a newbie to DIY vehicle maintenance so please bare with my ignorance. My plow truck was running fine this summer; however, a month ago it would not start. Battery is good, has good spark, and both fuel pump assemblies are running. I started by spraying starter fluid in the intake and the truck starts for a short period. Next I followed the gas lines and found the return kinked and leaking. That has been repaired. I removed the tank selector assembly and cleaned the internals, diaphragm was intact. Then I replaced the fuel filter. Still no start. I found the high pressure in-line fuel pump wire harness had been chewed up. Wires have been fixed and HP pump replaced, just in case. Still no start. I have fuel to the Schrader valve and I am replacing the fuel pressure regulator tomorrow. I'm at a loss, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Good morning,

I would start by checking the actual pressure with the key on to be sure the pump is delivering the correct pressure.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-fuel-system-pressure-and-regulator

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/car-cranks-but-wont-start

Key On Engine Off 35 - 45 psi
Key On Engine Running 30 - 40 psi

I would also get a noid light to test the injectors to see if the ECM is commanding them to flow fuel.

I believe it has spark if it started and stalled with you priming it.

Okay, so an update. I checked the fuel pressure and it was basically zero. I replaced the in tank fuel pump. Now I have about 20 PSI but not getting the 40+. The truck starts for a second like it would on starting fluid. I am going to change the fuel filter again and see how it goes. Any other suggestions? TIA

Try the fuel filter first.

The fuel filter is located on the frame rail between the frame-mounted high-pressure pump and engine.

Did you replace the in-tank pump or the high-pressure pump at the filter?

I actually replaced both the in tank and the high-pressure pump at the filter. I will change out the filter. Thanks for the help!

This is an old post but still having issues and I had to take a short break, lol. I have replaced in tank fuel pump, high pressure fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator and now I have PSI to the rail but still no start. I tested the injectors with a noid light and get no pulse. I did the self test to pull codes but I am not getting anything but a solid light.

Okay, do you have spark? Test for spark and see if the plugs are getting spark.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-test-an-ignition-system

You could also spray some carburetor cleaner into the air filter and see if it starts and stalls.

I have not tested the spark plugs themselves, but I did spray starter fluid in the air filter and the truck starts briefly and stalls as you mentioned.

Okay, then it sounds like the ECM is the issue as it controls the injectors.

The ECM is behind the left side kick panel.
