Here is the steps I followed the problem is step 4 I do not get the chime indicating it is in the program mode.

1. Press LOCK button 5 times at 2 second intervals to re-synchronize remote. 2. Insert key into the ignition switch. Turn ignition to the RUN position (as far as you can go without cranking engine). Wait for ignition chimes to stop. 3. Using the working remote, press and hold the UNLOCK button on the remote for 4 to 10 seconds. 4. Within the specified 4 to 10 seconds, continue pressing the UNLOCK button and then press the PANIC button ( on the programmed remote ) for 1 second and release both buttons. A chime will sound to indicate that the remote programming mode has been entered ( allow 3 seconds for chime to sound ). 5. Within 30 seconds of the chime, press and release the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously then press and release just the UNLOCK button on the same remote. A chime will sound indicating the remote has been programmed. Press and release the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously and then press the UNLOCK button oneach new remote you wish to program at this time. Locks will cylce afer each additional remote is programmed. 6. Turn the ignition OFF and remove key. 7. Test Remotes.

you may need a scanner to reprogram it. make sure your batteries are good in both key fobs. if you dont' have a any key fob then it will have to be programmed by scanner.

I understood what you are talking about and that is why I said you may need a scanner to fix it. There may be a problem with the key fob as well where it won't communicate with the vehicle.

I got it to program I found these directions for a key fob worked so if you have anyone else in the same position maybe you can pass it on.

Thanks for your help.

2001 Dodge Dakota FOB Programming

Instructions

1.

o 1 Sit down in your Dodge Dakota and make sure all of the doors are closed and your seat belt is fastened so that you aren't confused by the fasten seat belt chime during the programming process.

o 2 Put the key in the ignition and turn it to the "On" position, Do not start the engine.

o

o 3 Hold down the "Unlock" button on your remote door lock transmitter for four seconds. Press the panic button immediately. When you hear a chime, let go of both buttons. You are now in programming mode and have one minute to program all of your Dodge Dakota remote door lock transmitters.

o 4 Take the first remote door lock transmitter to be programmed and hold down the "Lock" and "Unlock" buttons at the same time for two seconds, Let them go and press the "Unlock" button. You will hear a chime. Repeat this step for all additional remote door lock transmitters that you need to program.

o 5 Turn the key to the "Off" position in the ignition. After one minute, remove your key and all of your remote door lock transmitters will be in working order.
