Hi,

The codes are all related to the ABS system. The actual GM codes for this are 14, 17, and 18.

If you look below, I highlighted a fuse to check and a relay. The relay is under the hood in the fuse/relay box. Make sure to check the fuses in that box as well. If there is another relay with the same part number, switch them to see if it makes a difference.

The fuse is in the interior fuse panel. Check it as well.

Here are two links you may find helpful:

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Hi,

That code is for vehicle stability enhancement system. I don't think this vehicle offered it in 1996. The system is activated by the electronic brake control module. Considering what you were having trouble with, it makes sense that it could have caused this to set.

Do me a favor. Delete the code and see if it comes back. It may be present due to other issues you were having.

Also, did the other codes go away?

Let me know.

The other codes went away after I change the fuse and relay... I deleted the code and it seems to be stuck on the c1287 code. do you think the steering wheel sensor plays a part with this code?

Hi,

It is very possible. I attached the wiring schematic below. It's cut into two parts to make it readable. The sensor should be near the bottom of the steering column. I don't know if it's because of the model year or what, but I have no diagnostics for it. So, we have to do the best we can.

If you look at the schematic, I highlighted 3 wires in the first pic. The gray wire at the top should have a 5v reference from the EBCM. The black wire at the bottom (low reference) should show continuity to ground. The light blue should show voltage changes when turning the wheel.

Let me know what you find.

Take care,

Joe

Hi,

It is near the bottom of the column and the steering shaft goes through the center of it. If you look at pic 1 below, it shows an exploded view of the steering column. I highlighted the sensor. Pic 2 shows what the component will look like.

Let me know if this helps.

Take care,

Joe
