I keep getting this code coming up when the service engine soon lights up. Without the code on, the car runs well but when light comes in then it runs bad. When the light comes on it feels like the car is struggling to go and won’t go much past 60 MPG.

Hi,

A P0420 is a code that indicates an issue with the catalytic converter. Do you notice any rattling from the exhaust system? Are there any rotten egg odors or strange noises from the exhaust?

Since you lose power, I have a feeling the insides of the converter have come loose and are blocking the exhaust. That will cause a power loss.

Take a look at this link. It explains how to test a converter. Let me know if you are comfortable performing the tests.

Let me know.

Take care,

Joe

Joe,

Thank you for the reply. There is a rattling noise every time I accelerate but wasn't sure if it was coming from the engine bay or where. What replacement converter would I need? I live in central NY, so I'm not sure if aftermarket converters will work, or if any type of catalytic converter will work for this car. I'd prefer the cheapest alternative since this is no show car but an excellent winter rat.

Thank you!

Hi,

If you look at pic 1 below, it shows the converters. Pic 2 shows locations. The code is specific to bank 1, so it will be located on the passenger side bolted to the exhaust manifold.

This converter is flanged to bold directly to the manifold. You could try to find a universal converter. You will need to remove the old one, cut the converter off the pipe and weld it back together with a new one. The problem is this. Chances are this will end up costing more in labor.

I checked Rockauto and the least expensive one they have is 267.00 See pic 3. I can get you a 5% discount coupon. I get them all the time because I purchase a lot from them.

Please understand, neither this site nor I have anything to do with Rockauto. I only checked because their prices are sometimes hard to beat.

Let me know.

Joe
