Transponder Key

I have a 99 mercury cougar and the key was broken off in the ignition. The cay will still start with the other half of the key but i was wanting to replace it. I have read that a new key can be programmed at home if you have 2 spare keys but will this work with only 1 broken key? The key is broken near the end towards the grip and does not effect the teeth

No, this procedure is for adding a third key to a working system. Once you change the lock, you no longer have any working keys.

Get a locksmith to fabricate a new key for you and reuse the present transponder.

Ok, thanks for the quick replies and the information. By chance would you happen to know about how much they a locksmith would charge in I purchased a key myself and had them cut and change the transponder?

You would need to check with the locksmith to be accurate. Prices varies depending on location.

You're still going to have to deal with the broken piece stuck in the lock.

The locksmith should be able to remove whats left of the key correct?

Yes, the locksmith would be able to remove the piece from the lock.
