Transmission does not shift into third gear or overdrive

Hi,
Have you done the basics such as checking to make sure the fluid is clean and full? Next, does the transmission shifter seem to be working properly? In other words, is it in drive and not 2nd gear? Has the check engine light come on that would indicate diagnostic trouble codes are present?
Let me know. Also, let me know if it is 4wd and the engine size.
