Transmisson swap?

Can I swap a transmission from a 2003 ford explorer 4.0 4wd into a 2006 ford explorer 4.0 4wd? I've been seeing mixed things online about it And wondering if I could get a straightforward answer from someone thank you in advance.

The straightforward answer is no, I would not use the 2003 transmission as a direct replacement for the transmission in your 2006 Explorer.

Even though both vehicles have the 4.0L engine, 4WD, and use transmissions from the 5R55 family, Ford made changes to the transmission for the 2006 model year. There are differences in internal components, speed-sensor arrangements and electronic calibration. Because of those differences, an earlier transmission is not considered a direct plug-and-play replacement for the 2006.

Thats what i was afraid of. Im new to the ford platform and unfortunatly didnt do my research before buying.so what would i need to do to use it or should i just chalk up the loss and resell?

I would resell the transmission. The changes are enough that you would need to change the base programming in the PCM to get the transmission to work without setting different codes. That would be more work and money that would be better used to repair the unit you have.
