In reverse it hesitates and transmission clunks as it engages

Putting it in reverse it hesitates and then makes a clunk as it engages. When it is hot the transmission will stop and not shift gears. It is an automatic transmission. There is a filter on the outside like a oil filter. Never seen this before.

Sounds like you have a transmission line pressure issue which it would be too low from the symptoms your describing. Have you checked for codes yet in the computer?

I posted the link above how to retrieve the codes from the computer. The check engine light will flash the engine codes out. When that is done your low coolant light will flash out your transmission codes on that car. Let me know what the code numbers you retrieve and we will go from there.
