Hello all, I am a fairly seasoned 20 year mechanic. And my customer brought me the car listed above hat is a project car of his. We have already overhauled the engine now we are working on the transmission. I previously was not shifting into 3rd gear without letting off the accelerator or putting in neutral and back to drive. So we started small and got a filter kit and the lock out solenoids the torque converter solenoid and the shift solenoids since there was not burnt fluid or abnormal metal shavings in the pan. Now with everything replaced the car has no reverse or neutral but it clicks the correct amount of times both at the shifter and at the transmission. Park is correct but everything else want to move the car forward. And it clunking each time you shift as though its going into a different gear similar to when you go from park to drive but at each position on the shifter. Please tell me this has happened before or you may know what causes this because I know I don't know everything and I am human but I have taken this transmission back down 4 times and I just don't see what is wrong here.

Good afternoon,

This sounds like a valve body issue. I would drop the valve body and clean it. You will have to remove all the valves and use a good cleaner to get rid of all the dirt and debris in the passages.

I attached a picture for you of the valve body. Make sure all the gaskets are installed and not damaged.

Thank you. I appreciate you taking your time to answer my question and just so we're on the same page before I jump back into this stupid thing you did see that it was not having this particular issue prior to my servicing that I did? I'm not questioning your suggestion I don't know much about internal transmissions I'm just curious if you are correct what caused it because it was not doing these things before the service that way I know in the future what to avoid doing in case I mess something up. I certainly don't want to make the same mistake twice.

It could be dirt or debris that got into the valve body itself. I would check the bottom of the pan when you remove it and look for any debris. That will tell you if there is any remaining debris inside.

Okay Roy, so I put a new valve body with new solenoids in the transmission and same issue. What's next?

Was there any debris in the old valve body?

I would check the line pressure. I attached the procedure and the pressures needed for you below. Let us see if the pump is providing the correct pressure.

I figured it out Roy! Yes, there was a little bit of debris in the valve body but not a lot everything seemed fairly clean however it turns out the issue all along was human error as I possibly had suspected from the beginning. I don't know how familiar you are with that translation but when you do the shift solenoids on it there is one large solenoid that goes above the valve body and in order to replace it you must disconnect the shifter cable the electronic shift box on the outside of the transmission and then there's a connecting cylinder that goes from the outside of the transmission for the inside which then places itself inside of a plunger it moves back and forth when you shift I had to disconnect this to replace the solenoid but I was on the outside of the train doing so so I did not see your parent leave the proper placement of this cylinder on the inside of a Transit at the time so upon reinstalling everything I had the cylinder in front of that plunger which was not allowing it to pull the plunger back or is it all which eliminated reverse and neutral from the equation, but you will be happy to know that my diagnosis from the beginning to take care of the third gear problem that originally had.
