I have the car listed above SE, it had a bad transmission. I bought a used one from a salvage yard it is out of a 2001 Maxima. Everything is going good with the car driving and shifting, the only thing is the new transmission doesn’t have a speed sensor setup it has got a plate covering the location for the sensor, since my old transmission has the sensor setup on the top of the transmission and I used the original wire harness on the new transmission I have no speedometer. I need to know if I can take the plate off and add a sensor to the new transmission? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

Good afternoon,

Both the 2000 and the 2001 use the same sensor for the vehicle speed signal. They are gear driven internally.

Does the plate unbolt or it is part of the housing? Can you post a picture of what you see?

Yes, it has a bolt holding the plate on. I cannot get a picture at the moment but am positive that it has a 10 mm bolt, so I can in theory purchase a speed sensor gear and install where the plate is right? No need to drop the transmission again.

You need to open the plate and make sure there is a gear inside that will mesh with the sensor end.

If there is no gear, then it is the wrong transmission.

Okay, and the gear should be above the shaft that’s connected to the CV axle right?

You should see it in the hole.

Take the old one out of your old transmission and you will see what I mean.

I no longer have the old one I used it for the core charge, but I do know that this new transmission is out of a 2001 Maxima so it should be the right one I would think?

At this point, I doubt it.

The 2001 had the same sensor location. The later years did not use that sensor. They used the revolution sensor.
