Changing automatic transmission to manual transmission

Anything is possible to do; however, is the cost and possible problems which will result worth the process.

If you want to do this, it is more than just replacing the transmission and powertrain control module. It will require a different wiring harness, different PCM/ECM, all hydraulics related to the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder, a different pedal bracket and clutch pedal, a safety switch for the clutch, transmission mounts, programming the new module, and the list goes on.

I guess what I'm trying to say is this. There is a lot more than the trans and the ECM. The cost will go up really fast and when it's done, there could still be issues.

Is there a problem with the automatic that requires it to be replaced?

PS: I don't mean to paint such a grim picture, but I need to let you know what to expect.

Aside from it shifting a little harsh and the neutral safety switch going out, there really isn't much wrong with it. I'm just not super fond of fully automatic transmissions. Especially in a car like the probe. Currently that's the only vehicle I have with a true automatic transmission. My 1997 ranger has a 5 speed, my bike has a 5 speed, and my 1951 Desoto has a semi-automatic 4 speed (automatically shifting from 1st to 2nd, and manually shifting from high to low range).

I totally understand and agree. It's funny, they hardly make any vehicles with a manual anymore. That is my first choice as well. I need a truck to plow where I live, and the only way to get a manual is if it is a smaller truck (import) or a giant one with a diesel. LOL
Plus, not many people can drive one anymore, so it makes a great anti-theft system. LOL
