My car will shift into drive and will go sometimes and sometimes not. I took it to AutoZone to get my check engine light read and it said the transmission speed sensor. Will it work when shifted into drive sometimes and sometimes not?

Hello, I am Danny.

The VSS or Vehicle Speed Sensors are mounted on the transmission bell housing inline with the crankshaft. Basically the input and output sensors work with each other to make everything work together by matching the RPM's and if one or both are not working right there will be a problem. I have attached a picture describing its operation and a link. Also, would you happen to have the code number written down/saved? Hope this helps and thanks for using 2CarPros.
