How much ground clearance is needed to remove the transmission? I'd like to remove it, bolt to my new engine, and then reinstall the whole package together.

Good morning,

You will need at least 3 to 3 1/2 feet. When you remove it, take it off the jack and set it on some plywood so you can drag it out the side of the truck. The tallest part is the bell housing with the converter.

Be careful and make sure you do not remove the converter. Leave it in the transmission. You do not want to damage the seal or bushing.

Roy, when we pulled the engine out, the converter came with it, attached to the flexplate. After I removed it from the flexplate, I put the converter back on the transmission in the truck, making sure to seat it down. Should I be worried about the seal or bushing? Are they ok? Do they need to be replaced?

Yes. I would remove the converter again and replace the seal. It most likely got damaged when removing the motor. The smallest knick in the seal will result in a leak.

I was able to remove the transmission last weekend; dropped out fairly easy. While underneath, I noticed that the 2 sections of driveline were starting to separate, exposing the splines. I'd like to re-grease those splines and push the sections back together. Any recommendations on the type of grease to use?

I use Mobil 1 synthetic grease for lubing the splines. It will not break down when it gets hot.

Do you have the resources to decode this tag? I can't find anything online for it.

I've already pulled it; here's a pic of the whole thing. I'm pretty sure it's a THM400, but I didn't know if there were any specifics from that tag. Here's a pic of the whole thing.

Okay, that is not the pan but good enough.

That is a turbo 400 long tail.

The modulator valve on the side is the key.
