Transmission problems

My car has a 5-speed manual transmission. The clutch was just replaced and then, all of the sudden, it went out and won't engage. The pedal is flimsy, almost as if it needed to be bled. The only lead I have on the true issue is that when you rev the engine, there is a rattling in the transmission. I looked at it to find the rattling sound, and it was coming from a metal piece on a cable on top of the transmission. I don't know if that is the clutch cable, but it is my leading suspicion. I don't want to tear apart the transmission when it could be something simple.

Extra details:
-The problem first occured because the driver had the clutch pedal depressed, pre-shifted into first (I do not condone that decision), and the clutch must have caught and caused a loud noise.
-When the car is off, the shifter easily slips into each speed gear and reverse.

Thanks for your help!

It does sound like a hydraulic issue. Check the fluid level in the clutch master and make sure it is full. It may have leaked out and now has air in the system.

There is a smaller version of the master cylinder right near the transmission, it's shaped almost like a tube the size of your palm. It is used for the clutch also.

Try bleeding that out and see if it helps. But be Sure to remove that cylinder from where its bolted on and hold it as High as you can to bleed it out.
Sorry I forgot whats it's called at the moment.

If the system has air in it, simply bleeding is not the answer. That air got in there somehow meaning there is either a bad master or a bad slave cylinder that needs to be diagnosed and replaced before bleeding.
