Hi,

I have a problem in my car. The fifth gear is missing and the check engine light comes on. I examined the car by obd 2 scanner, the trouble code is (P0500 - vehicle speed sensor) what this means? And where is the location of this sensor in the engine?
I am from Iraq we do not have car service centers in the near by, the mechanics told me to change the ABS?
I lost a lot of money with no benefit.
Can you help me to solve the problem?
Thanks.

Good morning.

I attached apicture and procedure for you for the vehicle speed sensor.

Roy

Usually with this code the speedometer works sometimes.

500

CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM: P0500: Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction

DTC P0500 - Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction

DTC P0503 - Vehicle Speed Sensor "A" Intermittent / Erratic / High

DESCRIPTION

The cruise control system uses the same vehicle speed signal that is sent to the ECM for the SFI system or the ECD system. If DTC P0500 is detected, perform the diagnosis using the inspection procedure for DTC P0500 in the SFI system (See: A L L Diagnostic Trouble Codes ( DTC ) > P Code Charts > Engine Control System - SFI System) for 2AZ-FE, or (See: A L L Diagnostic Trouble Codes ( DTC ) > P Code Charts > Engine Control System - SFI System) for 2GR-FE). The speed signal is converted for use by the cruise control inside the ECM. Both the SFI system and the cruise control system can set DTC P0500, however, the detection conditions of the two systems are different.

REMOVAL

1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
2. REMOVE BATTERY (See: Engine > Removal and Replacement > Removal)

3. REMOVE AIR CLEANER INLET ASSEMBLY (See: Engine > Removal and Replacement > Removal)

4. REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP SUB-ASSEMBLY (See: Throttle Body > Removal and Replacement > Removal)

5. REMOVE AIR CLEANER CASE SUB-ASSEMBLY (See: Engine > Removal and Replacement > Removal)

6. REMOVE SPEED SENSOR (NT SENSOR)

It may. I would replace the sensor and see if it will shift into fifth.

Do you have a scan tool to see if the sensor is sending a signal to the PCM?

Did you verify the connector pins are not loose, burned or damaged?

I just have an obd2 scanner which I shopped from Amazon which shape shown in the picture below. Do I need more advanced scanner to show more details? The connector pins are well.
Thanks a lot for rapid detailed answers.

That is just a simple code reader and will not read live information.

My preference.

Lots to choose from.

Hi,

I examined the car by scan tool, which told me there is a problem in the VSS sensor itself. We disconnected the pins of the NT sensor and re-examined the car, two trouble codes appeared. This means that the VSS is another sensor rather than the NT sensor as in the image below. What is your opinion?

Okay, did you get another scan tool to read live data to see if there is a signal from the VSS or the input speed sensor?

Yes, it has told me that the input speed sensor is okay, but the VSS malfunctioned.
