Transmission sometimes will not engage

Usually my SUV works fine. Occasionally recently I have had episodes where after I start it, it would not engage in reverse. I found out after turning it off for a few minutes then back on it works perfectly fine all of a sudden. The most recent incident was this week and it would not engage in reverse, nor would it up shift past third gear. It is an automatic. I am having trouble believing it is the transmission as when it is functioning there is not any slippage or rough shifting. Scared though because I am a disabled vet and this is my families only transportation. Recently in August 2017 spent my life savings to bring my son and wife from the Philippines. I need this SUV to last a few more years to give me time to save. Horrified when I saw a $6,000.00 price tag online for a rebuilt transmission.

First, I want to thank you for your service, we sincerely appreciate you. :) Lets see whats going on here. The first thing we need to do is run the codes to see what comes up here is a guide to help us get started. You can get a coder reader for about $20.00 from Amazon.

Next here is the transmission wiring diagrams so we can see how the system works. There is a transmission control module I would try removing the electrical connector and check for corrosion on the terminals here is the location of the module as well.

Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what happens.

Cheers, Ken
