How often should I check the level on a small leak since a mechanic has to do it from underneath?

Hi,

That's a tough question to answer because it's likely you drive different distances each day and I'm not sure how much is leaking.

Approximately how much leaks in a week's time? For example, a pint, only a couple of drips, or more? Also, do you travel approx the same number of miles per week?

As far as checking the fluid, the only hard part would be accessing the check plug on the transmission oil pan. If you are able to reach it, I attached the directions below for checking the level. The directions indicate a specific temp to check it. Allow it to warm up to operating temp and that should be fine.

Take a look through the directions and let me know if you have questions.

Take care,

Joe

See pics below.

Note: The engine needs to be running and the transmission in Park. If the engine is off, you will lose most of the oil in the transmission when checking.

I drive about 200 miles per week. A couple of tablespoons of liquid is on the driveway every morning. I had the level checked last week and was told it was fine. This was after seeing spots or a couple of weeks. I'm over 70 years old. Not capable of crawling underneath the car.

Hi,

I totally understand. I still don't know why the manufacturers have gone to this type of check for transmission fluid other than to force people to take it back to the dealer.

It doesn't sound like it's a bad leak, but things can change. Does the shop charge you for checking the level? If not, I would suggest at least twice a month. You are putting a lot of miles on it. If you notice more on the driveway, then have it checked sooner.

I hope in some way this helps. Let me know if you have other questions or if I can help in any way.

Take care,

Joe
