My 1997 XJ6 Van Den Plas 4.0 liter automatic transmission light came on, and just like the manual says, the tranny went into 3rd gear limp-home mode. But occasionally while limping home in 3rd gear, the light went out and the tranny acted normally, and the gears shifted ok, albeit roughly - also just like the manual said. I checked the ATF level, and it is in the normal range... Any idea what this could be, and the range of how much this should cost? Your help really appreciated, as I really don't want to dip into my retirement savings again. Thanks, Bob

You will have to start with a scan, as this is the best place to see what is going on electrically with the transmission, post any codes set for further assistance.
