Transmission Grinding Noise

When I accelerate and hit about 30/35 MPH, I hear a grinding noise from my transmission. Online forums explain this is coming from the torque converter and VW dealerships say it’s normal, but I am skeptical. It’s driven very easily as a daily driver, I am on time for all oil changes, and I’m about to go in for a 50,000 mile service.

Hi,

That is odd. The dealership said it was normal. By chance, is it loud enough for you to record and upload for me to hear? It shouldn't be grinding. Also, let me know if it has done this since it was new and if you have checked the transmission level and fluid.

One last question. Is it a 1.4L turbo or the 2.0L turbo?

I got the car with 33,000 miles on it and noticed it just before 40,000 miles. I haven’t checked the oil levels of it but I’m bringing it in for a 50k mile scheduled servicing which I believe includes transmission servicing.

Hi,

Yep, I heard it. Is it normal? According to VW, yes. Also, it does have to do with the torque converter. However, there is no fix for it and VW indicates it is normal.

I was able to find a "Tech Tip" related to this issue and have attached it below for your review. Read through it and let me know if the description seems to mirror what you experience.
