I am not sure whether to replace it or trade the car. I was rear ended last year and the drivers insurance company decided to total my car.

Good afternoon,
Since your car was declared totaled, the title will reflect that when a dealer does a title search. You will get less than 1/2 of the trade-in value since it is a salvage vehicle.
To replace it, if you got a used unit, plan on about $1,500.00 to $1,800.00.
A rebuilt unit would jump it to $3,000.00.

I believe that a rebuilt unit would be covered by a warranty, but what is a used unit?

A used transmission.
Do you have an extended warranty on the car? A warranty with your age car would most likely install a used transmission once it is confirmed bad by a shop.
