I have heard it is wise to change out the transmission fluid after a certain number of miles have been driven. However, I realize that a fluid exchange only replaces a relatively small amount of the original transmission fluid whereas a transmission flush should replace all of the fluid. However, since this an older vehicle (2007 Toyota Camry) I am somewhat hesitant to attempt a flush as I understand that it can actually be harmful to older transmissions. But since the mileage on this car is only 58,700 miles I need to know if a fluid exchange would still be preferable to a transmission flush.

Hi,

The idea that changing the fluid can be harmful is based on fluid condition. If the fluid in the transmission is extremely dirty and has a burnt smell, a total flush can lead to the transmission slipping. However, with the mileage you have on the vehicle, it is unlikely to be at that point.

Check the fluid condition. It should be a reddish color. If you want, wipe a small amount of the fluid on a white napkin, take a pic of it, and upload it for me to see. I should be able to make a recommendation based on seeing what you have.

Let me know.

Here is an generic guide to help walk you thought eh steps of changing the fluid, which I would just do the drain and fill if the fluid is not too bad.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-service-an-automatic-transmission

Fluid Type

Change Automatic Transmission Fluid Only As Necessary.

Generally, it is necessary to change automatic transmission fluid only if your vehicle is driven under one of the Special Operating Conditions listed under one of the Scheduled Maintenance Guide or Owners Manual Supplement.

When changing the automatic transmission fluid, use only "Toyota Genuine ATF WS" (ATF JWS3324 or NWS9638) to aid in assuring optimum transmission performance.

Notice: Using automatic transmission fluid other than "Toyota Genuine ATF Type WS" may cause deterioration in shift quality, locking up of your transmission accompanied by vibration, and ultimately damage the automatic transmission of your vehicle.
Capacities

Automatic Transmission Fluid Capacity

Drain and refill capacity .................... 3.5L (3.7 Qts.)

Dry fill .................... 8.0L (8.5 Qts.)

Okay. I did have a fluid exchange (and replace the filter) done and not the flush. Thank you much for the analysis. Will use the GoFundMe link to donate to your platform.
