Transmission fluid change

Hello 2CarPros team,

I just inherited the truck listed above (dually) with 410,000 miles.

Would you advise against changing the differential fluid and transmission fluid on this high mileage vehicle?

I only ask because it’s common for people to make the statement that changing the fluid this late in the game would cause issues.

Knowing who the past owner was I assume none of the fluids have ever been changed.

Hi,

That is a tough call. It is really based on how dirty the transmission fluid is at this point. If it is black and smells, new fluid could lead to a slip by cleaning the clutches. As far as the differentials, I can't imagine it would hurt servicing them. Actually, it may be a good idea.

Now, based on which differentials you have, you will need to get the correct fluid. Here is all the technical info for fluid types and capacity:

*The lubricant capacity will vary depending upon the housing mounting angle. The capacity given is for an angle of 4 degrees. A lubricant level close enough to the bottom of the fill hole to be seen or touched is not sufficient. The lubricant must be level with the fill hole.
