Hi,

I was given this car with transmission problems. I am trying to self teach myself how to work on transmissions. Well, I'm going to get straight to the point. It goes into every gear but I have to rev it a little for it to start moving. So I check fluid and was over filled not just that it was black so I drained it. Upon draining a bunch of gunk came out. So I added the correct amount of fluid and and the right type as well and the reverse kicks in right away but the drive gears are the same. I have to rev for it to start to move. I know I'm most likely going to need to replace the transmission but does anyone know what would cause that problem?

Thank you
Rob

Hi Rob and thanks for using 2CarPros.

On these vehicles, you need to basically drain and refill about three times to get all the old fluid out and drive it between each drain and refill.

However, if the fluid is that black and dirty, this can actually cause the transmission to slip worse. The gunk you mentioned came out is most likely debris from the clutch plates which are worn. If you clean them with new fluid, often times they slip worse.

With that in mind, the transmission needs rebuilt. They do make products to add to the transmission fluid to help stop slipping. Some of it actually works, but it's a temporary fix.

Let me know if you have other questions or need help.

Take care,
Joe

PS: If you decide to replace the transmission, let me know and I'll provide the directions.
