transmission has a pause engage when shifted into drive?

What you described can be caused by a few things. First, low or dirty transmission fluid. Also, there could be a hydraulic pressure issue. However, based on the mileage, you could simply have a seal that is going bad and allowing trans fluid to bypass it for a bit before it reacts.

So, have you checked the transmission fluid level and condition? Also, have you checked to see if there are diagnostic trouble codes stored? If you haven't, here is a link that explains how to do it on a GM OBD1 system. You don't need a scan tool. All you need is a short jumper wire or even a paper clip.
