Transmission disengages when idling at stops?

When I come to a stop at a traffic light, or any reason, then go to accelerate there is nothing there for a few seconds then the transmission slams onto gear with a sharp jolt that rattles my dogs, and myself, quite a bit. This doesn't happen all the time. About 50% of the time. Contact me.
