A friend of mine was driving his car and all of a sudden RPMs started going up as if it's in neutral. Car has been in great shape before that happened. He is an electrical engineer, so he removed the mechatronic and replaced all the sleeve gaskets/seals as its common on these cars (this is an e90 not a e46). No change. He also changed the fluid still nothing. Brought it to me to check it out as I do work on BMWs. Any gear you put it in car act as its in neutral. Code 4f81. Neutral, reverse or drive all the same, as its in park. I also scanned engine and found few but doubt they are related. Also took a video. Please advise. I have a feeling it's electrical.

I also tried to do the adaptation reset but I also have 2cfb. And now 4f84. All this just by putting it in gear and trying to move it. Also 2cfa.

The code is related to the EGS control module. This is the module that controls shifts along with other circuits. See pics 1 and 2 for description.

If the vehicle shifts oddly or won't engage, they recommend clearing the code to see if it returns. If it does, the transmission needs replaced. The EGS is integral and no longer sold as a separate unit. See pic 3

Let me know if this helps.

Hmm, that is not good. So it cannot be replaced because it inside the transmission or part of the valve body?

Hi,

If it is the 6-HP transmission, I have to say it can't be replaced separately. And I agree, it isn't good news. Confirm the transmission for me and also, it would be a good idea to confirm there are no loose wires or damaged connectors.

Let me know what I can do to help.
