I had my car taken into a mechanic after it stalled at a stop light. The only lights were the oil pressure light and the battery light. I turned the car off, restarted it, and drove it 2 miles back to where I started with no lights or problems. The mechanic shop stated the transmission needed replacing and sent the photo attached. Is this truly metal or just a scam?

Well the fluid on there is dirty but if there is metal in it I don't see it. I would start with a second opinion as the photo doesn't show enough. You say it started and you drove it, how did it act when you drove it? Was it making noise and shaking the car? If not I would say to take a sample of the fluid yourself and hold it in the light, move at around and see if it looks like glitter. Depending on the engine and trim level that could be a conventional automatic or it could be a CVT. Of those the CVT is the one you don't really want as they do tend to fail more often. The stall at a light and them saying it was shaking would fit with a CVT that is failing, but a conventional may do those as well.
Post the engine size the and trim level (Base, Limited and Premium) and we can go from there.

I agree with the above. I don't see any metal at least anything obvious in the photo provided, And the fluid color, although dirty still looks decent. Have you ever serviced that transmission prior and if so, about how many miles ago or what interval?
