Transmission acceleration issues

First of all the check engine light like has constantly been on for months now. The problem is when I start the car and put it in drive the transmission isn't putting the car in gear to drive, it won't move forward. I tried to put it in the other two gears after drive to see if I could accelerate forward that way but the car still wouldn't move, only the engine will rev up. But if I put it in reverse it will move backwards. The other thing I noticed is that the display on the dashboard that will light up whatever gear you put the car in, well it will light up in every gear I put it in accept drive. Can you please tell me what the problem is? Does the car need a new transmission or could it be an electrical fuse issue?

This is most likely a more serious transmission issue than just a fuse. However, it may not be internal to the unit. It could just be the shift cable and the light could just be a bulb.

Let's check the codes and see what they are because it more than likely will tell us what the issue is if it is internal to the unit. Then let me know what engine you have and if it is a 2 or 4 door vehicle. Thanks
