You are describing an idle speed that is too high. This is almost always caused by a vacuum leak. Start by looking at the small black vacuum hoses hooked to the engine. There is a diagram of them on the emissions sticker under the hood. Also, consider running water over the running engine while it is still cold to see if it gets sucked in anywhere.
