Can feel the truck shift into gear and engage, but I let off the brake and transmission slips and goes about a foot.

Good evening,

This sounds like an internal failure in the transmission. If you changed the fluid and filter then it is either the front pump, clutches or the torque converter that has failed.

Your suggestion? junkyard or used off Craigslist?or is rebuilding one cheaper?

A used one, yes. I would start your search with www.car-part.com.

Craigs list? no, never.

Rebuild? At least three times the cost of a used one.
