There's no way to know what's going on. You need to add to your description. What is grinding? Does it occur during shifting? During braking? Do you have an automatic or manual transmission? Which engine?

Transmission at 45miles per hr. Automatic trans .during shift. Engine is 3.9L just started so towed home so no more damage could be done

Without being able to hear it, the first thing I would suspect is a worn universal joint.
