My truck wants to go forward in every gear except park and won't shift out of low gear when going forward is this a sensor cable linkage or just fried transmission?

Hi,

When you shift gears, does the gear indicator indicate the correct gear? For example, when you place it in drive, is the D indicated?

Also, when in park, does it hold like a brake? (In other words, it won't coast)? With the engine off, if you place it in neutral, does it coast?

Please let me know. Chances are there is an issue with what is called a transmission range sensor. It is what identifies the selected gear for the modules responsible for shifting. If it shows the correct gears, then we may have an internal clutch issue.

I need the correct engine size as well. A 5.7L wasn't offered this year. I suspect it is a 5.3L, so that is what I will use unless you tell me something different.

If you look below, there are three pics. First, (pic 1) I highlighted the shift cable where it mounts to the side of the transmission. By moving that lever, the range sensor moves and a shaft on the opposite side moves in the transmission. With the engine off and vehicle secured, have a helper shift through the gears while you confirm there is proper movement.

If you look at pic 2, I highlighted and circled the transmission range sensor. Confirm the wiring to it is tight, clean, and not damaged.

Pic 3 shows the bolt which holds the shift lever to the input rod. That rod is what moves the ranges sensor and components in the valve body. Make sure that the bolt is tight. Other than internal damage, this is what I suspect is happening.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe
