Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.Com.
Based on your description, it sounds like it is working like a manual transmission. Basically, the transmission is always engaged and not allowing the engine to idle.
What I would like for you to do first, is read through this link to determine if any of the symptoms are similar to what you vehicle has done.

Next, if you notice, the link indicates a need to check for trouble codes. You need to do that. It sounds like the an issue with the torque converter clutch solenoid. This solenoid is designed to transmit power from the engine to the transmission. If the solenoid fails, one of two things can happen. If it fails in the closed position, you may not even notice it, other than a decrease in fuel mileage. On the other hand, if it fails in the open position, the engine is locked to the transmission so there is no transmission slip. With the transmission unable to slip, the engine will stall when the vehicle comes to a stop or is placed in gear.
I really feel there is a good chance that if you check for trouble codes, you are going to find a P0700 or P0740. That would indicate a problem with the transmission control module or the aforementioned solenoid.
Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.
Take care,
Joe
