There are several different things that can cause this. For example, it could be related to the transmission line pressure, a faulty transmission pressure solenoid, an electrical connection, a problem with the powertrain control module, and the list goes on.
Here is what I feel should be done. Because it will become a guessing game without diagnostic trouble codes, I recommend having the vehicles can-bus scanned for codes.
CAN stands for controller area network. Basically, the different modules/computers are tied together via a few wires. This type of scan will retrieve codes from any of the modules storing information.
