Was driving stop at stop sign waiting then went to proceed on press the accelerator aloud bang like something broke apart felt it too car stop dead in tracks would not respond in any gear

Have a trans guy look at it something may have broken in trans, kinda sounds like it or an axle.

When you say something inside transmission might be broke is there any specific part

Not really until you get it apart or maybe an axle broke at ujoint or clip is bad that holds it in.

So should I feel hopeful of the transmission not being completely lost or needed rebuilt

Well I don't know h ow many miles is on this so normally they do a total rebuild because they have to find out what is wrong.
