Defaulting back to second gear is "limp mode". That allows you to drive slowly to a repair shop without needing a tow truck. Your mechanic will connect a scanner that can access the "transmission computer" to read and record the diagnostic fault codes. Those will indicate the circuit that needs further diagnosis, or the unacceptable operating condition. Do not try to drive at highway speed in limp mode.
