My transmission shifts hard why?

I can drive the truck and it runs fine. After twenty minutes or so when taking off the truck shifts hard into first and second and third. But I can shut the vehicle off for three to five minutes and it will no longer do it. I was told it is the torque converter but I do not feel like it is. I have replaced the filter and fluid with no change.

It is not the torque converter, it sounds like you have a pressure control solenoid that has a broken spring. here is the location so you can replace it. If the transmission needs to come out. here is a video to help walk you through the steps with the instructions on how to fix the problem below:

It could be several things. Make sure the trans fluid is clean and full. If the check engine light is on, have the computer scanned for possible trouble codes. As far as the hard shift, it could be shift solenoids, the governor.
