Service transmission warning came on a stoplight. It would not gain speed upon acceleration, but RPMs were climbing. Put into park and the warning went away and the vehicle ran normally. Happened upon stopping 3 times. On the 4th stop, it felt hard down shifting and heard heavy clunking sound. The vehicle drives normally for 3 miles until I parked it. What do I do now?

Hi,

What you described sounds like the transmission slipped. The first thing I recommend is to check and confirm the transmission fluid is both clean and full. If it is low, it can cause this. Here is a link that explains how in general to check the fluid:

Note that the transmission dipstick tube will be sealed with a rubber plug. To check the level, you need a specific dipstick. I have no idea why they feel the need to do this, but they do. See pics below for directions for testing fluid level.

Next, is the check engine or transmission light staying on while the engine is running? If it is, have the computer scanned. Most parts stores will do a basic scan free of charge.

Here is a link that explains how to scan all modules. I'm adding it in case you have or have access to a CAN scanner.

Let me know.
