Transmission not shifting properly

So, I bought my truck a few months ago and I’ve noticed that when I go from P TO R it’s instant but going from P TO D it takes maybe a half second sometimes and is sometimes a little more clunky but not too much. I wanted to know if this could be a symptom of low fluid or just wear and tear cause other than that it shifts relatively fine, it definitely feels like it’s got 200,000+ for sure but I’ve had no issues. I’m only hesitant to change the fluid because Ford ditched the dipstick on this transmission, and I have no idea how the past owners were with maintenance.

Hi,

If it isn't too noticeable and shifts that quickly, chances are it is just due to wear. There are rubber O-rings in the valve body of the transmission that can wear and even harden allowing fluid to momentarily bypass them. That can cause a delay.

If you want to check the fluid, it requires a few special tools. I attached the directions below for you. And I agree, there is no reason it should be this difficult to check the transmission fluid.
