When it is time to shift I have to let off the gas to get it to shift. It also has a slap shift. Could I use the slap shifter instead of letting it shift its self

You can but get it scanned for codes first there may be another problem

I had it checked for codes and 0 codes. If the car has been sitting for almost a year could old fluid make it not shift right

Old fluid in a trans in ayear doesn't really mean a lot as far making stuff shift etc. Check fluid level and for color if you can, if dark brown or black then go to a trans shop. Or you could try a fluid change if you liked. Then drive it for about a couple of weeks and see if it straightens out it may. If not have a trans guy look at it.
