Transmission issue

sometimes even after letting it warm up back out put in drive an it sounds like it's in neutral for about three minutes then goes in drive just fine. then sounds as it don't shift into third gear or sounds as though it's in low and stays there. what would cause this is it transmission going out or a solenoid/solenoids. Help please before i just get rid of it. Thanks, mark S.
