Transmission not engaging

My car rolls backwards very bad on small inclines after i release the brake. When i hit the gas to stop rolling and to accelerate forward, my rpm's go very high and my car revs up very loud. there is also a rattling noise.

It sounds like you are low on transmission fluid, let's check the level first. here is a diagram to help you. Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.
