Loud bang forward gears gone, reverse works, converter whining.

Good morning.

Are you sure it is the torque converter whining?

The front pump is more common for the noise from lack of fluid. That may come from the filter being clogged from debris.

This may also account for the issue with engagement. I would start by changing the oil/filter in the transmission.
