I picked up a transfer case control module from a junkyard. The guy told me I have to have it reprogrammed. Is this true?

A new module will have to be programmed. A used one that has been programmed my or may not depending on application match.

Suggest you put it in and try it. If it doesn't work its either bad or needs programming.

As Rich says, try it. If it came out of a truck with the same transfer case and engine it may work as is. However it may also not have the latest software in it as there have been a few updates.
