Transfer case slips out of two wheel drive into a neutral position and will not go back in unless put in manually at transfer case and will still pop back out. The vacuum mechanism was taken out by a transmission mechanic to keep it in gear, but I need to know how to fix the issue or at least find out what is wrong?

take the case out and fix either the bent fork or clutch gear that may be worn out or bearings worn out.
